Straight outta Oakhurst

Orc Band in Marikest
First Engagement

On 14JUL00, The Party (minus Arawn), traveled to Marikest on hearing from Alard Hucrele that the mining town there had been subjected to a number of raids by a band of orcs, and that those orcs had settled in the local keep ( Brightstone Keep) atop the plateau which contains the mines.

Alard spoke to the Duke of Reeton, and secured an offer of the deed to the keep if the party managed to defeat the orc band and clear the keep.

Upon reaching Marikest, the party scouted the keep during the day, thus avoiding the daylight-sensitive orcs during their observations. That night, Sharwyn and Roland managed to silently kill two orcs patrolling the walls, and injure a third before the alarm was raised.

The following night, the party managed to get into place outside the keep and avoid an outgoing patrol, after which they engaged eight orcs and an orc sergeant on the walls of the keep. After this coup (during which they managed to sustain only minimal injuries), they managed to set an ambush (on Farhad’s suggestion) for the returning orc patrol, surprising and utterly destroying a further seven orcs and another orc sergeant with minimal injuries to themselves. Looting the corpses yielded a decent treasure haul.

After some time healing and regrouping, the party plans to hit the keep again in a day or two.

In Reeton...

The Party (minus Arawn) has finally arrived in Reeton, and spent the night camping in the Hucrele Warehouse. The Hucrele Factor in Reeton is Sharwyn’s Uncle, Alard Hucrele.

Kerowyn Hucrele asked Sharwyn (and the party) to look into whatever problem Alard has been having—she wasn’t sure exactly what the nature of the problems are—but suspects theft and/or bandits.

Meanwhile in Oakhurst...

Arawn is exploring around Oakhurst and soon will head into the Ashen Plains to do the same. He is busy training his wolf Kynan, and is making arrangements to hopefully establish a library in town, with the assistance of Kerowyn Hucrele. Twiggy is soon to take up temporary residence in a cage at the General Store as a tourist attraction, until such time as Arawn has other uses for him.

On the Road to Reeton

So All of the party except Kynan, Arawn, and of course Twiggy joined up with a Hucrele Caravan headed from Oakhurst to Reeton. Along the way they fought off attempted ambushes on the caravan by goblins, a pair of less than stealthy ogres, and a band of orcs. Roland was particularly skilled at scouting ahead of the convoy; Einarr Fenrisulfr spent most of his time sitting on one of the wagons crafting a bow; and Sharwyn acted as the XO of the group, setting up the watch roster, and cautioning the party to beware of the possibility that the ambush they were reacting to in front could be a distraction from an additional attack on the caravan’s rear. Cregga had the opportunity to rage about and kill things, which seemed to keep her pretty happy. I think I heard her say something along the lines of: “A day without blood is like a day without sunshine.” Farhad mostly did his job quietly and reasonably successfully.

The party took 8 days to get to Reeton, taking the time to follow up on the orc’s camp—finding their cave about 11 miles outside of the city, and being rewarded for their efforts via the discovery of, among other things, Ruff’s Percussive Tome of Identification.

Kill kill kill

There are two warring factions within the Citadel; The Goblins, allied with Belak the Outcast, and the Kobolds. This gives the characters chances for using diplomacy instead of muscle. The Kobolds, the more reasonable group, have two outstanding characters. The first is Calacryx, their pet baby white dragon and tribal totem. Calacryx has been stolen by the Goblins, and the Kobolds are willing to ally with anyone who can get him back. The second is Meepo, the kobold in charge of taking care of Calacryx. This scarred and pathetic little creature can build sympathy in characters and teach them to look beyond race.

My players retained the Citadel as a base of operations and used the resources mercilessly. They even used a winter apple to poison a dragon many levels later!

Region Map

The regional map we’ll be working from for some time has been started, and is taped to the table in the classroom. Feel free to add things to it.

Sunless Citadel

Completed Module Adventure “The Sunless Citadel.”

Original Party:

  • William as Arawn—a Half-Elf Druid/Ranger with ] the wolf,Kynan, as his Animal Companion
  • Ofer as Roland the Half-Elf Rogue/Sorcerer/Monk, brother to Arawn
  • Ofer, again, as Farhad the Human Paladin, some sort of a cousin to Roland and Arawn

Soon after was added:

  • Caitlin was added to the Party as Sharwyn Hucrele, a Human Sorcerer appearing in the module. The module was adapted a bit (Sharwyn is dead in the original) to allow Caitlin to join via the rescue of Sharwyn Hucrele by the party. Sharwyn has an Animal Companion Lyra, a weasel who did not appear in the Sunless Citadel portion of the adventure.
  • Sabbrielle was added as Cregga, a Dwarf Barbarian, after the rescue of Sharwyn, to complete the killing and looting of the Sunless Citadel.

At the end of the Citadel Clearance Adventure, Arawn captured a Twig Blight, Twiggy.

The rest of the campaign begins from this point. Party is currently in the nearby town of Oakhurst, Sharwyn Hucrele’s home town, from which further adventures will proceed.

The party recovered the sword Shatterspike during this adventure.
